How to Calm a Toddler Before Sleep

7 gentle techniques — no crying it out

Your 2–3 year old is bouncing off the walls at bedtime? That's normal. Their brains are growing faster than ever and sometimes they genuinely can't switch off. These 7 techniques help their body and mind wind down — gently.

Why Toddlers Struggle to Calm Down

The part of the brain that controls impulses and self-regulation (the prefrontal cortex) is still developing at age 2–3. Toddlers literally don't have the brain wiring yet to "just calm down" on command.

That's not bad behaviour — it's biology. Your job isn't to make them calm down. It's to create the conditions where calm happens naturally.

The techniques below work with their developing brain, not against it. They use sensory input (touch, sound, rhythm) and predictability to trigger the body's natural relaxation response.

Spot the Signs Early

Start calming techniques when you see any of these. Once they're overtired, it's 10x harder.

👀Rubbing eyes or ears
🤕Becoming clumsy or clinging
🌀Getting hyper or silly (the 'second wind')
😢Crying over small things
😤Arching their back or going stiff

7 Calming Techniques That Work

🫁

1. Belly Breathing Together

Works from age 2+

What to do

Lie down with your child and place a stuffed animal on their tummy. Ask them to make the toy go up and down slowly by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.

Why it works

Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's built-in calm-down switch. The toy makes it visual and fun for toddlers.

2. The Body Scan Game

Works from age 2.5+

What to do

"Let's make our body go to sleep, one part at a time. First, let's relax our toes... now our legs are getting heavy... now our tummy is soft and warm..." Work slowly from toes to head.

Why it works

Progressive muscle relaxation reduces physical tension. The slow, quiet narration also slows their breathing and heart rate naturally.

Duration: 3–5 minutes

📖

3. A Short, Calm Story

Works from age 1.5+

What to do

Read a gentle bedtime story in a slow, soft voice. Use stories with repetitive phrases and calm endings — not adventures or exciting plots.

Why it works

Stories create a powerful transition ritual. Your voice becomes a sleep cue. The predictability of a familiar story is deeply comforting.

Duration: 3–5 minutes

4. Hum or Sing Softly

Works from birth

What to do

Hum a lullaby or sing a simple song very softly while your child lies in bed. The same song every night works best.

Why it works

Low-frequency humming is naturally soothing. When it's the same tune every night, the brain associates it with sleep and starts winding down automatically.

Duration: 2–3 minutes

5. Gentle Back Rub

Works from birth

What to do

Slow, rhythmic strokes on their back or gentle circles on their forehead. Keep a steady, predictable rhythm — slower than you think.

Why it works

Gentle, repetitive touch releases oxytocin (the bonding hormone) and lowers cortisol (stress). The predictable rhythm mimics a heartbeat.

6. "Goodnight" to the Room

Works from age 2+

What to do

Walk around the room together and say goodnight to things: "Goodnight teddy. Goodnight window. Goodnight stars." End at the bed: "Goodnight, it's time to sleep."

Why it works

This is a closing ritual that gives toddlers a sense of completion. It works similarly to how adults mentally "close" their day before sleep.

Duration: 2–3 minutes

7. The Happy Thought

Works from age 2.5+

What to do

After lights are out, whisper: "Think about the happiest thing that happened today. Hold it in your mind like a warm light. I'll be right here."

Why it works

Positive visualisation calms anxiety and redirects racing thoughts. It's a simple mindfulness technique adapted for toddlers.

Technique #3 in a Book: 40 Bedtime Stories

Story time is the most effective calming technique — but it only works when you have the right stories. Exciting adventures wake toddlers up. You need stories that are short, calm, and designed to end on a quiet note.

We wrote 40 bedtime stories specifically for this purpose. Each one is 3–5 minutes, has a sleep-ready ending, and gently teaches values like kindness and courage.
